312 - Constantine Triumphant - Emperor Constantine has dream of a cross leading his army to victory, declares Christianity the official religion of the Roman Empire

325 - Council of Nicaea - Constantine convenes, affirming the doctrine of the Holy Trinity

367 - Books of the Bible Finalized - Athanasius, Bishop of Alexandria, finalizes the 66 books of the Bible, confirmed by Council of Carthage in 397

397 - St. Augustine's "Confessions" - autobiography of Augustine, describes his conversion to Christianity, a model for Christian writers throughout Middle Ages

476 - Fall of the Roman Empire (Byzantine or Eastern Empire fell in 1453 to Ottoman Turks)

622 - Founding of Islam - Prophet Muhammad receives the Quran

732 - Stephen Martel defeats Muslims' invasion of France

800 - Charlemagne crowned Holy Roman Emperor

1054 - Schism between Eastern (Orthodox) and Western (Catholic) Churches begins - Greek and Latin churches excommunicate each other (rescinded in 1965)

1095 - First Crusade begins - Pope Urban II urges mostly French army to retake the Holy Land and Jerusalem in response to Muslim aggression
